This is the story of Kay Callaghan whose café ‘Rosewood’, at Skelwith Bridge in Cumbria, was for many years a much loved haven for villagers, travellers, musicians, animals and animal lovers. Arriving there in 1950 with three children, no money, a troubled marriage and an abandoned acting career, Kay’s impact on the small village lake district community was immediate.  In later years she founded two animal charities (one with Alfred Wainwright), saving hundreds of animals from a hopeless fate.

Kay’s story is told by her daughter, poet Kerry Darbishire.
